Cultivating Dreams, Ambitions and Aspirations

Writer: Catrina RoweCatrina Rowe

First, you need to give yourself permission and the environment to dream. Open your heart and mind to opportunities, ideas, and possibilities. I recently had an interesting experience with the concept of dreaming ambitions. I spoke about my projects and plans for the future then asked the person I was trying to get to know "How about you? What dreams and aspirations do you have?" His answer was truly upsetting and unnerving to me. He replied "I do not have dreams anymore" Can you imagine a world so soul-destroying that this is a common enough answer to the question of what dreams and aspirations do you have? We do not need to imagine we live in that world. I dream of a better place. I dream of a world where we feel free to dream. I dream of a world where people are full of beautiful unique aspirations and ambitions and have the gull to go for them.

There are several aspects behind goals, dreams, ambitions, and aspirations. Understanding the different ins and outs as well as the ebbs and flows of our dreams can help us achieve them. First is the dream. You need an idea of what you want to do and where you want to go. A practice that helps manifest what you desire is to create a solid vision of what you want to happen in your head what it looks like and what it feels like to have it happen and to write down on paper ideas about that vision. Then, you hold that vision while you move towards it. I get overwhelmed by my own ambition at times. I do go through periods of doubt and confidence issues at times. Here are some of the things I do to stay motivated and on track with my dreams. Have a simple visual that encompasses everything you want to feel and experience. To explain the visual I use you need a bit of back story. One of the projects I have is a fusion of church, concerts, and conferences, where it integrates a new type of faith with transformational talks and learning music. My background, is I have a Bachelor of music honours degree and went to teacher's college but threw out the dream of being a music teacher when hard times fell on me. I never was a performer and not a talented musician. I struggled through my degree because I couldn't sing very well and did not know how to play piano. The simple visual that leads all my ambitions is me playing a grand piano on a world stage from the point of view of a professional camera sweeping around me. I am singing and playing leading an ensemble. I have had a lot of trauma in my life but in this visual of my future self, she feels only peace joy, and harmony in her life. It is not just about me leading an ensemble the visual is about me being on the world stage leading communities, being happy, being successful, and being well. It is a very simple but powerful visual of what I want my dreams to look and feel like.

After you envision what your dream is, write down your ideas about it and add a visual to help you dream your dream the next step is thinking about your blocks and barriers to achieving your dream. It is good to think about blocks and barriers objectively like you are an observer and not think of them as a personal attack against you. These blocks and barriers exist, yes, but they can be overcome or worked around, and are not a death sentence to your dreams. If you can remove yourself from the intense emotions around the blocks you open yourself to finding solutions and ways to work through the blocks and barriers.

Your dreams are not likely to magically appear at your doorstep in a blink of an eye. Thus, always take steps towards what you want. Take steps daily, weekly, and monthly, and celebrate the journey. Any progress made is progress made. Set goals along the way that are manageable and realistic for you to make. Staying positive, motivated, and on track is not easy with the pressures and sways of today's society. Find ways to remind yourself that you have value. Your dreams have value. You following your dreams and living your authentic life has great value.

Turning your dreams into reality is easier than we are conditioned to believe. First, set your eyes on what you want to see, clear the rain and fog from your vision, set yourself in motion, and start building momentum, if something happens that throws off your momentum set your sights again and build momentum again, be receptive and allow flow, soon enough opportunities will arrive and your dream will come sooner than you expected. If you can simplify your thoughts around your getting what you desire into cause and effect, what is set in motion stays in motion, the more I put into my dream the faster it comes. The key is staying open and receptive because our dreams may not come to us on a path we expect or can control and we certainly can not control every aspect of our path. Believe in yourself, be in flow, set goals to get to the bigger dreams you desire, and go for whatever it is that makes your heart sing. You got everything in you to make it happen. Go for it whatever it is!
